In other forms of curanderismo the shaman uses corn kernels as a divinatory and diagnostic tool. The healer would read the patterns and alignments of the kernels and guide the patient into a healing path. Here I gamble using obsidian (derived from the volcanic glass common in the outskirts on Mexico City) figurines that I purchased while visiting Mexico. I spit these souvenirs onto the drawing surface, an act both of seeking and of mark-making, and I await the unobtainable answer.
